When the society purchased 40118, it was not in running order.  It had been withdrawn from service following the failure of one of the traction motors.  The locomotive suffered further damage during a period of storage prior to its move to Birmingham.  The power unit suffered frost damage and vandals removed most of the cab fittings.

As a society we have spent a considerable amount of time restoring different aspects of the locomotive.  This section is an interactive guide to the restoration completed so far.  Click on the coloured 'hotspots' to be taken to a section detailing the work done on that area.

For those interested in more 'technical' details, why not look at the "What is a Class 40" section that includes more technical descriptions of loco parts.
